Supplementary weld symbols Meaning

Supplementary welding symbols are used to enhance the basic symbols and offer extra specifications or instructions. Supplementary symbols can be used along with the existing symbols to give more details about a weld.

These symbols are often the same in both ISO and AWS standards, but sometimes only one of the standards uses a symbol for a specific requirement.

AWS Supplementary weld symbols

There are total 9 Supplementary Welding Symbols defined in AWS A2.4 Specification as:

  1. Weld all around,
  2. Field Weld
  3. Melt-Through
  4. Consumables Insert (Square shape),
  5. Consumables Insert (Rectangle shape)
  6. Spacer (Rectangular shape),
  7. Flush or Flat Weld (contour Symbol),
  8. Convex weld (contour Symbol),
  9. Concave Weld (contour Symbol).

ISO Supplementary weld symbols

Supplementary weld symbols are similar to AWS in ISO and they are defined in ISO 2553 standard. There are total 10 nos. ISO Supplementary weld symbols as specified in below table.
