Stud Weld Symbol Definition

The symbol used for stud welds is quite similar to that used for spot welds, with the main difference being that the circle in the symbol has a cross inside it. This symbol is positioned beneath the reference line, with the arrow pointing towards the surface that the stud will be welded to.

In below stud weld symbol,

  • 20: Number of Studs to be welded,
  • 3/8: Stud diameter (size)
  • 6: Spacing between studs.

Stud Weld symbols are always placed below the reference line and there is no other side weld symbol. This means they have only arrow side significance.

AWS Stud Weld Symbol

The dimensions of the stud are specified to the left of the symbol, while the pitch is indicated to the right. The number of stud welds is written underneath the symbol in parentheses. If the stud welds are arranged in any other configuration besides a straight line, the dimensions for their spacing must be clearly stated on the drawing.

ISO stud Welding Symbol

The ISO stud weld symbol is a graphical representation used to indicate the location and size of a stud weld on an engineering drawing. The stud welding symbol is designated by a circle with a cross inside it, similar to the symbol used for spot welding. The symbol is placed below the reference line, and an arrow is used to point towards the surface to which the stud will be welded.

In below, stud welding symbols as per ISO 2553,

  • d: means stud side,
  • n: number of studs,
  • e: center to center distance between 2 studs (also called Pitch).

The dimensions of the stud (stud dia.) are specified to the left of the symbol, while the pitch is indicated to the right. The number of stud welds is written below the symbol in parentheses. If the stud welds are arranged in any other configuration besides a straight line, the dimensions for their spacing must be clearly stated on the drawing.

Stud Weld symbol Code/ Letter Identification

The ISO code assigned to stud welding is 781 and the American Welding Society (AWS) uses the letters SW, which are placed in the tails of the reference lines . However, it’s important to note that these numbers and letters do not provide complete information about the welding process, which may involve capacitor discharge, arc stud, friction welding, or other techniques.

Therefore, a note on the drawing or a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) should be provided to give detailed information about the welding process being used.

Shear Stud Weld Symbol

The shear stud weld symbol is a type of stud weld symbol that is used specifically to indicate the location and size of a shear stud weld on an engineering drawing. This symbol is similar to the ISO or AWS stud weld symbol.

There is no special stud weld symbols for shear stud or gun stud weld. The standard stud weld symbols as covered here applies to all types of stud welding. Type of process to be specified in the tail section if required to differentiate between shear or gun or any other type.
