Edge Weld Joint Symbol meaning?
The edge weld joint symbol is a graphical representation used in engineering drawings to specify the location and type of weld to be used in an edge joint, flanged butt joint, or flanged corner joint. The symbol is placed on the reference line of the drawing, with an arrow indicating the location of the weld.
What is an Edge Joint?
An edge joint is a type of joint used in welding, where two metal parts are joined by fusing their edges together. In an edge joint, the two parts to be joined are placed edge-to-edge, so that their edges are aligned.
AWS Edge Weld Joint Symbol
An edge weld joint is a type of welding used to connect two or more metal parts together by creating a weld along the edge of the parts. The weld metal may cover either a portion or the entirety of the width of the edge.
A edge weld can be placed on one side or both sides of a welding joint. A simple edge joint weld symbol as per AWS A2.4 consists of:
- a arrow line,
- Reference line
- weld symbol placed above or below the reference line,
- Tail (optional for additional information).
As shown in below figure, a Edge joint weld symbol consists of two rectangular butting each other places on the reference line. The required weld size (depth of weld penetration) for a Edge weld joint is always shown on the left side of the edge weld symbol.
ISO Edge Joint Weld Symbol
The ISO edge joint weld symbol is a graphical representation used to indicate the location and type of weld to be used in an edge joint, flanged butt joint, or flanged corner joint in an engineering drawing. The ISO edge joint weld symbol is similar to the AWS Edge joint weld symbol.
The main type of Edge Weld Joint symbols as per AWS A5.4 are shown in the below table.
Types of Edge Joints
A edge joint weld configuration is possible in various forms based on the placements of the welded parts. The most commonly possible Edge joint types are:
- Square groove,
- Bevel Groove,
- V-groove,
- J-Groove,
- U-Groove,
- Flare-V-Groove.
